Don’t try Aerial Yoga if…

Aerial yoga is a trend that has become popularized in the yoga community relatively recently (comparing to the traditional styles of yoga which have been around for centuries). It is a style that utilizes a hammock to perform traditional and adapted asana’s, I talk about all of this at length is a previous blog post I shall link right here in case you want to learn more about the style.

Today I want to talk to you about why maybe aerial yoga is not for you. Don’t get me wrong its an excellent workout, lots of fun and generally very safe, however, if you have any of the later mentioned conditions, maybe steer clear of it for the time being.

Whatever form of exercise you use, its basis is building on top of what was repaired therefore adding stretching and flexibility rapidly increases the process of break down and rebuilding tissues. Its important for us as practitioners to be aware of the body doing these repair so that we do not attempt to breakdown tissues while the body is active in the so called repair mode.

With aerial yoga there are certain conditions to watch out for, these include:

  • Pregnancy

  • Glaucoma

  • Present surgery especially in the shoulder, eyes, back, hips, hand or wrist regions

  • Irregular heart function

  • Very high or very low blood pressure

  • Early onset vertigo

  • Osteoporosis

  • Recent head injury

  • Fainting

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Severe arthritis

  • Sinusitis

  • Disk Herniation

Now these conditions do not necessarily mean that you can never and should never even go near a yoga hammock but they do mean you should take your personal situation into account, practice caution and always (ALWAYS) inform your instructor before hand so that they can adjust to your specific needs or introduce alternatives.

Be self and practice lots of self-care my lovelies.
